Ortega Pediatric Therapy, PA provides speech therapy to children in Jacksonville, Florida. We are passionate about communication. Whether fostering speech skills in a child or sharing information with families, our goal is clear communication. Thoughts, feelings, ideas and opinions make us all who we are. Communication is the ability to share these things about ourselves with others. When there is difficulty communicating, the impact on a child and a family can be overwhelming. There can be social, academic, emotional and financial impacts. Ortega Pediatric Therapy, PA provides services to help families with children experiencing speech delays and speech disorders. If you have concerns about your child's speech, please have them screened by a speech-language pathologist. Time is precious and early intervention is critical in getting the best results possible.
Children begin developing communication skills as infants (crying is communication) and continue to acquire more and more skills with every passing month. For some children, learning speech sounds can be challenging. They may have a few errors, such as saying "tat" instead of "cat, " or they may have so many errors that family and friends cannot understand them. They may create their own patterns as they attempt to learn the sounds adults are making, if these patterns are incorrect they may need help learning the accurate muscle movements needed for certain speech sounds. Having a child's speech skills screened by a speech-language pathologist will allow parents to know if the errors are age-appropriate or if further testing and therapy may be recommended.
Speech errors can be precious and entertaining when our children are tiny. We all giggle when a two-year old tries to say "spaghetti" and it comes out more like "puhsketti." Many mistakes are age-appropriate and children learn to say longer and more complex words with time. However, if a child is not learning sounds in a timely manner they may need help to progress. Withholding therapy can prolong the incorrect muscle movement pattern and delay the learning of more mature and accurate muscle movements necessary for clear speech. Delayed intervention can negatively impact academic and social success.
