FAQs

How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?

If you have concerns or questions about your child's development, contact a speech-language professional. The "wait and see" approach can cause a delay in providing help to a child who may need it. The earlier a difficulty is detected, the sooner your child can receive one-on-one help to improve their speech skills.

Does Ortega Pediatric Therapy accept insurance?

No, at this time all services are private pay. You may be able to submit invoices to your insurance company for reimbursement if your health insurance plan covers these services. It is recommended you reach out to your insurance company prior to initiating speech therapy.

Why is my child hard to understand?

Children begin developing communication skills as infants (crying is communication) and continue to acquire more and more skills with every passing month. For some children, learning speech sounds can be challenging. They may have a few errors, such as saying "tat" instead of "cat, " or they may have so many errors that family and friends cannot understand them. They may create their own patterns as they attempt to learn the sounds adults are making, if these patterns are incorrect they may need help learning the accurate muscle movements needed for certain speech sounds. Having a child's speech skills screened by a speech-language pathologist will allow parents to know if the errors are age-appropriate or if further testing  and therapy may be recommended.

My child's speech is so cute! Why should I fix it?

Speech errors can be precious and entertaining when our children are tiny. We all giggle when a two-year old tries to say "spaghetti" and it comes out more like "puhsketti." Many mistakes are age-appropriate and children learn to say longer and more complex words with time. However, if a child is not learning sounds in a timely manner they may need help to progress. Withholding therapy can prolong the incorrect muscle movement pattern and delay the learning of more mature and accurate muscle movements necessary for clear speech. Delayed intervention can negatively impact academic and social success.

What is a typical speech therapy session like?

It is fun!! Children learn through play and speech-language pathologists are pros at making learning fun! Your child will be watching, listening, modeling and experimenting with the sounds of speech. They will be looking in a mirror, watching video clips of themselves and becoming aware of how different movements of their mouth can create different sounds. Sessions are action-packed and rewarding.

How can I help my child?

Have your child's speech skills screened. If they need a boost in the area of communication, seek speech therapy. Be an advocate and a cheerleader for your child's developmental journey. If your child is receiving speech therapy, perform the recommended activities your therapist provides because practicing the new skill with your child will lead to improvement. Ortega Pediatric Therapy,PA is a firm believer in team work.
